2018 is no longer around the corner, it is finally here. And if you’re like me, you’re thinking, “How the hell is it 2018 already?!?!”
As we reflect on years past, we realize how fast time moves.
Some of us are excited to be starting out on a new path, some of us are struggling with our current situation, and others are completely lost.
As we get older and wiser, we realize how difficult it is trying to figure out what to do with our lives.
How to Find Success (and Happiness) in 2018
There are so many different directions or paths to take, the decision can be overwhelming. With all the uncertainty in the world, how do you start your business? How do you know when to just go for it?
Before getting too worked up, remember that everything worthwhile in life never comes easy. Here are 8 things to know in 2018 before taking a leap of faith.
1. Be Self-Aware
Being Self-Aware is the 1st crucial step in mastering your life. But what exactly does that mean? It’s comprehending that success won’t happen overnight; It requires years of hard work, discipline & consistency. It’s recognizing problems will always exist; you can either choose to be cynical or be positive & proactive. It’s grasping that opportunities are everywhere; When 1 opportunity goes, there are 5 others waiting ahead. It’s acknowledging your value; What do your skills, experience, and education have to offer? It’s understanding your own personality, talents, and strengths and learning how to utilize them effectively.
So what can you do to become self-aware? Change your point of view! Find out how others perceive you to get another viewpoint and 2nd opinion. This will provide key insight into how accurate your self-assessment is. Begin reading the book about yourself. Let go of whatever happened in your past. Every day we are writing part of our own story and the next chapter is awaiting, so make yours fascinating! Go on YouTube to find inspirational leaders who motivate you to pursue your dreams. Self-awareness is knowing yourself better than everyone else.

2. Don’t Wait For The ‘Perfect Moment’
Most people, myself included, are waiting for this ‘perfect time’ to take action. The hard truth is that there is never a perfect time or an ideal moment in your life to get started. Stop hesitating and overthinking everything, just go for it. I honestly believe it is easier now more than ever to create a business in this digital era. With the capabilities of technology nowadays, you can simply run your business from any smart device connected to the internet.
For most readers, time is your biggest asset, so spend it wisely. Make time to surround yourself with the right people, continue to grow and learn new things, and focus on things that really matter. Have a two year and five year plan. Write them down. Review it every year. See what progress you made. Remember your roots and how far you’ve come. Make the necessary changes and adjustments going forward. Time is more precious than money, it is something you can never get back once gone. Don’t waste too much time doing stupid shit or waiting for the perfect time to make major changes in your life. Make tomorrow happen now.

3. Embrace Failure
Don’t let fear of failure hold you back from getting started. Chances are high you are going to fail anyways. Those failures actually turn out to be the best life lessons. A lot of people see failure as a negative, when in reality failure is essential in the process to achieve success. Do not let fear of judgement from your friends/family or fear of making mistakes paralyze you from the necessary action. Everyone is going to have nay-sayers and haters, especially the bigger your dreams. Use the skeptics as motivation. Prove all of them wrong by accomplishing what you’ve been striving for since the beginning.
Personally, I have failed many times in my life trying new things and will continue to do so because I know it is necessary. It is the tough lessons I’ve learned from failure that really pushed my growth. You need to fear regret more than failure.
As Henry Ford said – “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”
4. Have Balance
Everything is great in moderation. Having balance is crucial for success, both for your life and business. Do not let your fear of missing out not allow you to unplug and disconnect. Do not stay attached to your smartphone all the time or be online 24/7.
Take a break, both mentally and physically. Your body and mind need to rest and reenergize. Spend a little time each day meditating. Meditation helps you relax and focus, even if it is just for a few minutes. You need to discipline yourself into good habits, one small decision at a time.
Sure, going out and getting ‘lit’ is cool, but too much partying is dangerous. Social Media is an amazing tool, which was unavailable to most people even 10 years ago, but too much time worrying about getting likes and followers can affect your business and personal relationships. Do not get me wrong, I am a huge advocate for sharing those important life moments with others spending time with friends, family, and significant others. It is vital not to forget to concentrate on yourself as well. Once your life is balanced, you will prioritize what is important and you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to.
5. Change Your Perspective
Once you are Self-Aware, you then realize you are never going to have all the answers in life….neither will anyone else. Changing your point of view will help you understand that making your desired impact takes time, so learn to be patient. Continue to grow your value, every single day. Invest in yourself and over time the results will show.
Apply the same mindset in your starting your business. Keep the big picture in mind and focus on the details that truly matter. And when your business starts to fail, do some deep analysis on the root cause and take action. Be proactive about fixing your business problems.
Stop complaining and blaming others, no one is going to care about how difficult something is. There is so much to be grateful for in your life, do not lose sight of it. Every person on Earth has problems, so save your pity party story. Instead, use all of that energy to start grinding and get one-step ahead of the competition. Do what the other 99% is not. The world changes when you change your perspective.
6. Experience Pain
Our brains are wired to keep us safe from harm. We are not designed to do things that make us feel uncomfortable or scary. When we experience pain, we rationalize with ourselves to automatically stop. So why it is imperative to go through pain? Because in order to grow, you must suffer. You need to establish mental toughness and grit to help you get through those very hard times in your life.
There are two sides of pain that I believe many people really do not understand. There is one side of pain, that is the suffering and the discomfort side. But there is something greater just on the other side of that. If you can find a way to push through that pain, success is right on the other side. The experience of adversity builds calluses for your brain. Successful entrepreneurs do not go through life attempting to be unscathed.
Recognize that pain in temporary, it may last for a minute or an hour or a day or even a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will takes its place. If you quit however, that will last forever. Use your pain as inspiration. Let your suffering push you forward, let it drive you, let it make you compelled to accomplish your dreams.
7. Stay Focused
It is challenging to stay focused nowadays with the endless distractions. Do not fall into that ‘follower’ mentality. Keeping up with the Kardashian’s pregnancies or latest celebrity gossip has no benefit for you and is irrelevant. It only makes you feel worse about yourself and your own life. So stop comparing yourself to everyone else, make your own story great. Have a vision and create the future you want, do not just be a participant in society. Be active, be engaged, find mentors and help others along the way.
You have to recognize that skeptics are ubiquitous and they will try to bring you down with their negativity. Ignore them, literally put on your headphones and tune them out if you have to. Focus on what is important for your business and surround yourself with people that push you towards your goals. Growth is the only guarantee that tomorrow will be better. The question to ask yourself every day is very simple – What are you doing to develop yourself and your business?
8. Stop Talking and Execute
The easiest way to get started is to stop talking and start doing. Talking about your latest and greatest ideas is simple. Executing your new business idea is the most challenging part of the process. The more difficult the execution, the harder it will be for your business to enter into the market space.
Do not let that stop you. Use the tools at your disposal to help you make the vital 1st step to spring you into action. Have big goals, document them, and get started in small steps and phases. The most successful businesses in the world don’t happen overnight. They take many years of great planning and execution and lots of failures along the way (see #3).
They also have incredible leaders at the helm. People follow authentic and passionate leaders. Great leadership is one of the most underrated assets in business. So push yourself to become an amazing leader and start executing your ideas. Real life experience carries much more value than how many books you’ve read or videos you’ve watched. Let this be the last article you read before launching your business and taking it to the next level!
If you remind yourself of these 8 things every day, you will be successful. Every day you have to work at your goals and the significant changes you want in your life will eventually come to fruition. If you are truly driven, nothing can stand in your way!
