Overcoming Pain Through Art: Sabika’s Story

Overcome Pain Through Art

Hello, I am Sabika. I am originally from Pakistan, now living in London. —

I am a chartered accountant by profession with a love for art. Whenever I used to get any free time since as long as forever, I used to draw and paint. My friends and family had always been a really huge support and motivation in taking up my arts to bigger and public levels, but I had always thought that I wasn’t ready (Yet).

Sabika's Story

By fate, I got a chronic illness in May 2015. This illness prevented me from being able to sit or do any sort of activity, causing me to leave my job. I suffered with depression, struggling to get through the days. To overcome my pain, I would draw and paint.

One day a post on Facebook caught my eye for an exhibition in Pakistan. Despite my illness, I thought, “Let’s do this.”

I was amongst the last two people who got a chance to be a part of the exhibition – just two weeks before the exhibition date. I had no social media presence or products to sell, but had loads of designs in my mind and even on paper. That’s when the journey of my “It’s a Wonderful Life” began.

As it is said, “A journey of a thousand miles start with a single step”.  That exhibition was the first single step towards a wonderful journey ahead.

I have always believed that if you have a dream, you owe it to yourself to make it come true. The fact that there is so much I want to do and so little time to do it drive my ambition.

Now, my work as both an accountant and as an artist gives me a way to connect with people.

It gives me an opportunity to play a part in this world, and make it a better place. I makes life more thoughtful and more colorful each day.

My love for drawing, making, and filling life with color is something that I have always valued as an amazing gift. For me, art is anything that can make a person ‘feel’ something. My work portrays love and hope, show the battles within our souls, talk about relationships, and talk of connections with ourselves and with others.

Art is something that makes me feel happy, alive, and true to myself. My art – the choice of colors, medium, and presentation of ideas – is a depiction of what goes on in my mind. It portrays a concept, an expression of how I feel, what I see and what I think, and how I see and perceive the world around me.

I’m taking ‘It’s a Wonderful Life- by Sabika’ slowly and growing it gradually each day with new designs and art. I have so many ideas in my mind that I need to get out through paint and letters. At times I cannot sleep, as I am just thinking of how and when I will be able to make them all.

I am loving every bit of this journey. Through my art, I am spreading colors, happiness, creativity, and thoughts. It is truly an amazing and blessed feeling.
